Domain Rules

As a rule of thumb the only do

main worth using are .com, .org then .net in that order BUT this is not always the case as country domains get preferential treatment when it comes to local search.

If you live in the UK and you are looking for a local builder the search results will always show more website domains ending in .co.uk then any other domain extension i.e. .com .org etc.

Final Word On Domain Name Extentions

This brings me to my next tip, if you only want to target people from the UK for example, it would be best to get a .co.uk than a .com But if you are targeting a worldwide market it would be more beneficial to purchase a .com, .org or maybe a .Net domain extension.

  1. nice post. definitely a very useful info for starters and also for everyone. people often likely miss this part when registering a domain name. good work!

  2. Great Post! I feel that the first question should be the relevancy to your website. Is your website informative (.info), an organization (.org), a multimedia site (.tv), etc. The next question should be your targeted audience, as you illustrated.

I agree that .com is the most widely selected and accepted, and should always be selected as first pick.

Great little article and hope to see more.

You are spot on there, the only thing is that over the years I have notices that Google does not really take .Info domains that seriously because they are mostly used for spam. But there are some .Info domains that I have seen in the number one spot on google for a highly competitive keyword- if you type spain onto google you will see a .Info at the top, Rare

      • Ashara says:

Wow I just had a look at that myself, the Spain thing thats the first time I have ever seen a .Info on the first page of Google

  4. Well the blog post was concise and nice :) but I just have one question … I thought… “.com” stands for “commercial” and not “company” ?

    Hi,

Great read, just a few comments,

Older domain names are preferred so instead of getting a new name, sometimes it is a good idea to go to the domain name aftermarket and get an “old” name.
Sometimes you can even find one with PR and inbound links

Or you can add extra years of renewal +5 (at least 5 additional years)

    Also,

in regards to ccTLD, or Generic it would usually be the best solution to go with .Generic, and have the ccTLD forwarded (webforward 301) to the .com

    • Robert says:

Thank you for your contribution David, you are 100% correct older domain names are always preferred of our new domain names and you are right sometimes you can find old domains that have expired which still have PR and inbound links ( quite hard to find). Another good thing about expiring domains is that sometimes they are already listed in Dmoz.

When it comes to cc.co it would be best to steer clear of it because Google have de-indexed most of the websites with that domain extension because of All the spam and low quality content.
