Don’t Do These 8 Things On Your Blog

blogging mistakes Dont Do These 8 Things On Your BlogEveryone seems to have a blog nowadays but there are definitely a few things you should not be doing on your blog if you want to succeed.

Having a blog is great because it gives you a chance to express your opinion and share your expertise with the rest of the world.

Setting up a blog is very easy with the advent of WordPress and blogger but there are some traps that new and even seasoned bloggers fall into.

There are a few things that you should not be doing on your blog. In This article I’m going to show you what they are and hopefully you will be able to use these tips to take your blog to that next level.

1. No Crazy Layouts

There are so many themes to choose from today that it has become quite ridiculous. When it comes to choosing a layout less is sometimes more.

If you decide to choose one of the more elaborate themes for your blog it can make your blog look confusing and hard to read.

I’ve been to some sites where they have three columns with three different types of information in each column and I didn’t know what to do.  I’m not saying that three columns is a bad idea but just make sure you know how to utilise them properly.

You want your visitors to be able to see the content that you have created clearly so using a two column blog layout is always the safest way to go.

2. No Big Headers

Big headers may look sharp and professional but they will end up pushing your text down below the fold of the website.  Below the fold basically means that your visitor is going to have to scroll down to be able to see the content.

If your visitor has to scroll down to see your content most of the time they will just press the back button and leave your website.

Always remember that you have to give the visitor what they are looking for within three seconds or they will leave.

3. Under No Circumstances Should You Forget About Social Media

Social media has grown over the last few years into a major source of traffic.  Always make sure your content on as many social media platforms as possible.

There are many websites and plug-ins on the market today that can do this for you all on autopilot.

4. No General Blogging Please!

This is also a big no no, don’t get me wrong general blogs can be fun but niche blogs are more focused and hence you will receive more visitors and a great readership.

You will always find out that the most successful blogs on the Internet today are niche focused.

I have seen some successful general blogs but they are few and far between (I may be wrong)

5. Never Disable Your Comments

This is a big no-no even if you are just starting your blog.  I know that if you allow people to comment on your blog you are opening yourself up for criticism but this is fine. You want people to be able to comment on your blog so you know if your posts are effective or not.

One of the most attractive things on a blog is when there are big conversations going on within your comments section.  Whenever I see the conversations going on within the comment section it tells me that people like the post.

Some people will decide whether or not to bother reading your post just by looking at the comments alone.

6.  Don’t Use Black Hat Techniques.

You have white hat, grey hat, and black hat techniques. White hat are ethical techniques like manual bookmarking, manual backlinking, fresh content basically doing what Google likes.

Black hat techniques are unethical like tricking people into doing things, spamming, using automated tools etc.

Grey hat techniques are the ones that are in between white hat and black hat.

Now just stick with white hat and steer clear of black hat stuff because black hat techniques will just get your website in trouble like being penalised, sand boxed or even in some cases the indexed altogether. TRUST ME YOU DON’T WANT TO BE DE-INDEXED

7. Why Are You Not Reading Other Blogs?

Reading other people’s blogs is one of the main ways of keeping up with the breaking news within your niche.

Also when you visit other blogs always make sure to leave a comment because leaving a comment has the potential of getting you traffic and increasing your social proof.

Remember whenever you are commenting you must make sure that you have a Gravatar because the mystery man avatar looks terrible and it makes you look like an amateur.

8. Don’t Forget To Post Some Content

The jury is out on this one because most bloggers say you should post at least twice a week and others say once every day.

The choice is really up to you I think that posting twice a week is a bare minimum three times a week is perfect.  But there again it’s really up to you.

What I did was post on a Tuesday and Friday every week and then I increased it to Tuesday Wednesday and Friday.  I’m trying to post at least five times a week, it’s a bit of a challenge but I’m getting there.

I would love to hear are your Thoughts about this article. Please leave a comment below. Thank you

Thoughtful list, Robert. #8 is my biggie. I get very antsy when I’ve gone a few days without posting. I forgive myself because I know I’m creating and giving in other ways. Readers don’t know that, so when I post, I try to make it good stuff. Quality, quantity or both? Nice challenge.

Hey Robert, this is eye opener post, I was making some mistakes you pointed out here, particularly points 4 & 7, so far I was writing general blogging and never read other blogs too, but I am not going to repeat the mistakes after reading you blog, credit goes to you, Tons of Thanks!

    • Robert says:

Hi George, yes your right point number four is very important because when you try to cover too many topics/subjects then you won’t really know what your visitors are really interested in. Also number seven is equally important because if you don’t read other blogs You will not be able to create fresh content on Where your Industry going.

      • George Lucas says:

Robert, thanks for the reply, you are very much active here, why don’t you try “LiveFyre” CMS in your blog, it is more social and lively! We love to see your replies live :)

        • Robert says:

It funny that you should say that because I have been thinking about giving it a try.. Will the standard wordpress form still appear on my website or does “LiveFyre” take it off?

Hi Robert, thoughtful list!# 1 is what most bloggers do that’s why they commit mistakes! Crazy and unnecessary layouts drives away readers! So be careful about it!

Definitely can’t stress the content part enough. No marketing technique in the world is going to make someone read a blog that isn’t read-worthy in the first place. On the other hand, make content people die to digest, and you won’t even have to try (well, THAT hard) to market it. It will just fall into place naturally.

    • Robert says:

It’s true content is one of the most important parts of a website. And making your blog that captivates the attention of your audience the challenge. Also coming up with Good content can also be challenging. But like you said when you have great content it is much easier to market your site

  6. Ferb says:

I agreed with these 8 tips. Conten is king, I believed.

I wasn’t love to read blog but only comment’s on blog to get backlinks. However, it’s over, I’m read blog now is because of learning and of course I’m still commenting on blog for them to figure out how they can improve their blog.

I have found out Ferb that blog commenting using CommentLuv plug-in really helps your blog to attract some great people. Over the last three months of using the plug-in my website has exploded with comments and traffic. But you only get out what you put in.

  7. Melissa says:

The strangest thing for me is when people close comments on their blogs…. Why don’t they allow others to ask questions or to express their opinion?

Hi there Melissa the same thing puzzles me as well.. I find that the more you interact with your visitors the more they will come back to your blog. I love answering comments and adding value to my readers.

  8. Harriet from MobilePhoneDeals says:

Thanks for the tips! I agree with your point about not having a crazy layout! There is nothing more annoying than a blog with a flashing layout and average content, I’d rather read a blog with good content and a simple layout.

    • Robert says:

hello Harriet thank you for your comment. What I have learned is Your website might look good to you but to your readers it looks rubbish. So we always have to to design our blogs and content with our visitors in mind because at the end of the day it’s all about them.

  9. Karan lugani from IIT Jee 2012 syllabus says:

I totally agree with you on the point of niche blogs and general blogs. I run a multi niche blog and I know how difficult is it to cope up with as compared to niche blog.
Karan lugani recently posted..IIT ResultsMy Profile

    • Robert says:

hey Karan, I used to run multiple blogs but it was just too time-consuming and hard to keep up with. Or it could be because I’m just disorganised LOL. I just decided to close down Most of my websites and just concentrate on this one and a 3 other moneymaking site that basically look after themselves.

  10. Interesting post. It really help me a lot. Thought black hat was okay, and somebody actually told me to use this so-called technique. But now, things are little bit clear to me. So please feel free to send me suggestions guys on what really is the best technique.

    Rizza Summers recently posted..mentalismMy Profile

    • Robert says:

hello Rizza, a lot of people especially newbies use black hat techniques because they want to cut corners and get results fast. But in the black hat world this is not so because if you don’t know what you’re doing your going to kill your website. A classic example of this is a newbie buying 10,000 backlinks directly linking to their main URL and hence killing their own site. But Someone who understands black hat SEO would never do this because they know what would happen.

It’s always best to use white hat because in the long run it will get you far better results and long-lasting results. if you need some more specific help send me an e-mail at and I will help you out.

  11. Daniel says:

I also have the same question as Melissa!I What is the aim of blogging for the blogger that closes the comments? Is he writting the post only for himself??

    • Robert says:

Hello Daniel, that baffles me every time I can understand turning comments of on Specific pages at turning comments of on your blog is madness. Like you said what’s the point of blogging if you Turn your comments off, Blogs were created for interaction.

  14. Bryan Ring says:

    Social Media: Spot on!

Comment Form: Who would do that? Especially if you have a “How to Site or Blog”

General Blogging: I’ve made that mistake on my FREE WordPress Blog, since have re-vamped it.

Other Blogs: MUST! Especially blogs like yours that let’s you leave links back to your site

Postings: I’m actually not much of a blogger per say, so my articles are limited to bits & pieces until I have time to put all the content I’ve gathered together for editing & SEO. Usually when I’m not building websites or MOWING lawns for a living.

Must guest post everyday (my opinion), especially if traffic is limited to Google searches, etc.

Thanks again Robert, great stuff here!

Thanks for sticking around my blog Bryan :) . most of the things in the article I have done myself but As long as we learn and improve our blog should get better and better over time.

When it comes to content creation whenever I get an idea I just start an article even if it’s only 100 words and then come back to it later.
At the moment I have got 10 articles on the go, but over the coming weeks I will complete them and post them.

as they say “Rome was not built in a day”

  16. Darrell Hall says:

Nice article Robert. I just got my site up a couple of weeks ago. Had my domain name for about 10 years but never did do anything with it. Didn’t really know how. I realized I had a famous sounding name that actually gets searches…lol That’s because of the 70 & 80′s band Daryl Hall and John Oates. People miss-spell his name and my page pulls up on first page. Cool. Now trying to figure out how to monetize that…lol With a few online mentors teaching me, I shouldn’t have any issues. My site right now is very basic at this time. Working on changes and updates slowly when I have time. Take care!
