Please Use Simple Words

When writing your posts try to stay away from using big words because they are what I call “post roadblocks”.

A post roadblock is when the reader comes up against a word they have never seen before or may not understand. An example of this may be using the word “actuate” instead of “determine” or “Plethora” instead of “many”

Remember you are not writing a term paper for your psychology degree so try and keep your blog easy to read. If your blog is easy to read you will find that people will stay on your blog for much longer and they will read more posts.

Avoid Long Titles

When a visitor lands on your blog and they start to scroll through your posts your headlines should be easy to read and compelling.  It’s not that difficult to create a compelling headline you just have to make good use of power words.

A short powerful headline or draw any reader into clicking on that blog post.

If you’re the title of your post is too long it can exhaust the reader and they may not want to read any further. So don’t let a poor title sabotaged a great article.

When I say keep your headline short do not use more than 10 words if possible any more than that and your headline becomes hard to read.

KISS Keep It Short And Sweet

Having a blog with long and short posts is great but at the end of the day you should be thinking “who am I writing for?”

Now if you’re writing for search engines then your posts should be long but if you are writing for your visitors it’s best to keep your posts no longer than 750 words in my opinion.

Long posts can be tiring to read but short posts can be read quickly.  A shorter blog post encourages your visitor to look at other posts on your blog.

I have found personally that keeping my blog posts under 750 words has increased my page views and decreased my bounce rate dramatically.

Why You Need More Whitespace

The more whitespace you have on your article the better. Have you ever been to a blog that had so much text on it looked intimidating?

If you have a lot to write please make good use of white space. When I say whitespace I mean, make sure that you split up your paragraphs into two or three sentences. Look over this blog post to get a better idea of what I mean.

In the beginning of 2012 you can bet your bottom dollar that there is going to be even more Google updates.

The updates that will be coming out this year will “weed out” all the spam and corner cutting methods.

Another thing to look out for this year is that Google is going to start building up a more precise profile about your website.

When I say profile I mean Google will now start to build up mass information about your website as its algorithms become more sophisticated.

So bearing that in mind Google will begin to shut down sites that do not conform to its vision of how the Internet should be.

If your website doesn’t depends solely on organic traffic from Google you don’t have to bend to its rules and regulations.

I hope I haven’t scared you! In the list below I will show you some of the SEO tactics you need to steer clear of this year or risk your site being NUKED.

1. Linking from AA blogs

Over the last 18 months getting links from AA blogs (Auto Approved) has been big. An auto approved blog is where the comments are “un-moderated” meaning that you can post any old comment press submit and it will automatically be approved.

Have you ever been to a blog and seen 150 comments? These types of blogs that have been targeted by spammers.  Having your links on these types of sites is a sure fire way to get your blog into hot water.

Whenever you use one of these services that offer thousands of backlinks for peanuts, AA blogs are where your URL will most likely to be posted.

2. No link wheels

Link wheels used to be highly effective backing 2009/10 but today in 2012 you better steer clear of them. There are many Webmasters in the SEO niche that still debate if these are still effective.

Let me ask you a question? Google knows about auto blogs, content scraping, black hat SEO techniques, spun content and any other technique that tries to manipulate the system.

So logically they know about link wheels and all the variations.

The dangerous thing about link wheels is that they leave a massive footprint that Google can follow.

So they will follow one link and see where it goes then follow that link and see where it goes and hence follow into a circle and see that all the links point to your website.

To add to the mix most link wheels are made with spun content. So what kind of impression will Google have about your site after it has gathered all this information? Not a very good one.

When it comes to Google in 2012 all I can say is stop trying to cut corners and do things properly.

3. No mass submissions

Using software or a service to mass submit your content to various networks is not the best way to go about raising the authority of your website in Google.

An example of this would be to submit your article to thousands of different article networks in the hope of getting a one-way back link to your site.

If you are using this practice you need to stop immediately because all this does is help Google to create a more precise profile about your website.

If Google finds your article on multiple article directories that would be classed as “duplicate content” and if you have been using spun content that’s even worse.

There is no hiding from Google because the links all point to your website. That leads me onto my next point.

4. No spinning

18 months ago spinning your article and then submitting it to multiple article directories and Web 2.0 properties used to work like a dream.

But Google updated their algorithms to be able to sniff out synonym changes within an article.

So to combat this SEO black hatters started to spin the articles to over 70% unique in an aid to fall search engines.

The problem with this is that again if Google sniffs some sort of “search engine manipulation” your site will end up getting penalised or the indexed.

5. No scraping / auto blogs

These tactics do not work at all, don’t get me wrong there was a time when I used these methods but that was in the “post Panda” era.

Scraping is when you basically take somebody else’s content and post it on your own blog obviously this is duplicate content.

Auto blogs used to be a great way to make some money on Adsense but the Panda update that was released last year was designed to sniff out and destroy all auto blog, scraper and low quality sites.

Some people are still having some success with auto blogs however Google is destroying these types of sites one by one.

Many Webmasters and blog owners see SEO as a big deal on their website. While SEO can be pretty important you have to remember that it’s not all about SEO.

1. I Want To Be Number One On Google “Period”

Well everyone wants to be number one on the first page of Google for their chosen keywords but this isn’t always the case. We all know that being in the first position on the first page of Google is very important because up to 60% of the organic clicks come from the first position on a Google search.

But if this is your only goal then you are going to fail overall because what about your readers and visitors.

Over the last six months search engines have changed the way that they rank and view websites. You will find out that in 2012 Google is going to be using personalised searches.

What this means is that people will get different results depending on where they are, their searching history, cookies and other factors.

Late last year Google announced that they will no longer be showing what keywords people used to find your website if they are signed in to their Google account. This is one of the reasons why you cannot just focus on Ranking because search engines like Google are moving the goalposts on a monthly basis.

2. You Haven’t Posted In How Long?

If you have a blog or website and you haven’t posted any content in the last six months your blog has sunk like a brick in water.

If you want the SEO to succeed on your blog or website you have to create and post a steady stream of content.  But it cannot be any content it has to be the type that engages and educates your target audience.

A stagnant blog will not help SEO at all because gone are the days where you could create a one-page website and it stays at number one for years.  Search engines want fresh content.

Any Old Link Will Do!

Backlinking is one other most important things every blog or website needs to be able to rank well in the search engines. But there is a right way and a wrong way to link build and if you are buying thousands of backlinks or spamming you need to it stop now.

Don’t compromise on the integrity of the website by getting back links from worthless and irrelevant websites because in the long-running it will not help your website out one bit.

Having a blog is great because it gives you a chance to express your opinion and share your expertise with the rest of the world.

Setting up a blog is very easy with the advent of WordPress and blogger but there are some traps that new and even seasoned bloggers fall into.

There are a few things that you should not be doing on your blog. In This article I’m going to show you what they are and hopefully you will be able to use these tips to take your blog to that next level.

1. No Crazy Layouts

There are so many themes to choose from today that it has become quite ridiculous. When it comes to choosing a layout less is sometimes more.

If you decide to choose one of the more elaborate themes for your blog it can make your blog look confusing and hard to read.

I’ve been to some sites where they have three columns with three different types of information in each column and I didn’t know what to do.  I’m not saying that three columns is a bad idea but just make sure you know how to utilise them properly.

You want your visitors to be able to see the content that you have created clearly so using a two column blog layout is always the safest way to go.

2. No Big Headers

Big headers may look sharp and professional but they will end up pushing your text down below the fold of the website.  Below the fold basically means that your visitor is going to have to scroll down to be able to see the content.

If your visitor has to scroll down to see your content most of the time they will just press the back button and leave your website.

Always remember that you have to give the visitor what they are looking for within three seconds or they will leave.

3. Under No Circumstances Should You Forget About Social Media

Social media has grown over the last few years into a major source of traffic.  Always make sure your content on as many social media platforms as possible.

There are many websites and plug-ins on the market today that can do this for you all on autopilot.

4. No General Blogging Please!

This is also a big no no, don’t get me wrong general blogs can be fun but niche blogs are more focused and hence you will receive more visitors and a great readership.

You will always find out that the most successful blogs on the Internet today are niche focused.

I have seen some successful general blogs but they are few and far between (I may be wrong)

5. Never Disable Your Comments

This is a big no-no even if you are just starting your blog.  I know that if you allow people to comment on your blog you are opening yourself up for criticism but this is fine. You want people to be able to comment on your blog so you know if your posts are effective or not.

One of the most attractive things on a blog is when there are big conversations going on within your comments section.  Whenever I see the conversations going on within the comment section it tells me that people like the post.

Some people will decide whether or not to bother reading your post just by looking at the comments alone.

6.  Don’t Use Black Hat Techniques.

You have white hat, grey hat, and black hat techniques. White hat are ethical techniques like manual bookmarking, manual backlinking, fresh content basically doing what Google likes.

Black hat techniques are unethical like tricking people into doing things, spamming, using automated tools etc.

Grey hat techniques are the ones that are in between white hat and black hat.

Now just stick with white hat and steer clear of black hat stuff because black hat techniques will just get your website in trouble like being penalised, sand boxed or even in some cases the indexed altogether. TRUST ME YOU DON’T WANT TO BE DE-INDEXED

7. Why Are You Not Reading Other Blogs?

Reading other people’s blogs is one of the main ways of keeping up with the breaking news within your niche.

Also when you visit other blogs always make sure to leave a comment because leaving a comment has the potential of getting you traffic and increasing your social proof.

Remember whenever you are commenting you must make sure that you have a Gravatar because the mystery man avatar looks terrible and it makes you look like an amateur.

8. Don’t Forget To Post Some Content

The jury is out on this one because most bloggers say you should post at least twice a week and others say once every day.

The choice is really up to you I think that posting twice a week is a bare minimum three times a week is perfect.  But there again it’s really up to you.

What I did was post on a Tuesday and Friday every week and then I increased it to Tuesday Wednesday and Friday.  I’m trying to post at least five times a week, it’s a bit of a challenge but I’m getting there.

The good news is that there are other ways to keep your visitors engaged and coming back to your blog daily.

Below I’m going to show you a few ways on how you can give value to your readers.

1. Please Answer Your Comments

This may sound silly but it is a very powerful way to keep your readers coming back because when you reply to comments it makes your blog look more “human” (for lack of a better word)

So answering comments on your blog is one of the things that you must try and do every day.

2. Answer questions

David C of vidc.dk  noticed that I answered Ioana Moise question relating to her website on Website Creation – You’re Doing It Backwards

“By the way, I am really impressed with your answers and how you assist your readers and follow up. it is always nice with web-mentors like that.”

These sorts of comments really show you that people notice when you take the time to answer your reader’s questions and they appreciate it.

Another reason why it is a good practice to answer questions from your readers is so that you can showcase your expertise in the field.  Showing your expertise also adds trust to you as a person or your brand and it also helps to build your social proof.

3. Go The Extra Mile

If one of your reader’s arks for help on a particular subject sometimes is a good idea just to help them with the problem.

For me personally I have helped many of my readers doing things like helping with SEO, backlinking,   bookmarking and even given away 1,000’s of free YouTube views.  For me it only takes 10 min but for the person it could take days.

4. Have Manners

Always speak to your readers with respect especially when it comes to comments. I’ve received some comments that I may not agree with but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Even if a reader upsets you still treat them with respect.

5. Keep Adding And Updating.

There are so many different things you can add and take away from your blog that will increase it’s overall value.

One of the things that I like doing is updating my popular blog posts with an extra paragraph or two. What I do is look in the comments and see what my viewers want and then added to the blog post accordingly.

Conclusion

When it comes to blogging you have to continuously improve on “value add!” Not adding enough value can easily lose you visitors and subscribers so remember your blog is always about what you can give and not about what you can get.

I bet you gasped when you read the title of this post. The reason why you probably gasped is because you’ve heard everywhere that content is king. But I’m going to share with you today the reason why content is not King per say.

As we all know already that Google doesn’t only just use seo when it comes to ranking a piece of content. There are many other factors that Google uses such as backlinks, content quality, outbound links etc.  So we already know that content alone will not guarantee high rankings in search engines.

I was reading a post the other day of a lady who said that she started her blog at the beginning of this year. She wrote 30 articles and all she received were a handful of hits per day and one or two comments on a few of her articles.

She was devastated and felt very deflated because she thought that if she wrote quality content ,she would somehow get thousands of visitors per day and the search engines would love her. But she found out that this simply was not the case, she found out that content is not King.

What is king then?

Now I’m going to reveal to you what really is king even if you have rubbish content. When it comes to the Internet there are a few Kings that if you can use them individually, you will get far more results.

Traffic and promotion are the real kings of the Internet. If you know how to use these two Kings you don’t even need to play by Google’s rules.

You can have the best content in the world but if you don’t know how to promote it, then you’re dead in the water. A website without traffic is as bad as a piece of content without any traffic.

We all know the analogy of an advert on the moon, there’s no point because no one will see it.  This is the same thing when it comes to content.

What do I do with my content then?

There are a few things you need to consider when writing a new piece of content

• How you’re going to promote it?
• How are you going to get your content out there to the masses?

If you cannot answer these two simple questions then you are probably just wasting your time writing the content. Don’t get me wrong, Google will index your content and you may get a few organic visitors to your website but this alone is not good enough.

You need to have a traffic and promotion strategy if you want to get the most out of every piece of content that you write.

Traffic strategy

There are a few things you can do to promote your content for maximum impact and I’m going to share a few with you.

If you have WordPress then it makes promoting your content that much easier but if you haven’t,  it doesn’t matter because you can use the same methods.

1#Ping Your Article

This is easy. You can just use PingGoat or pingomatic or those of you who have WordPress you can go to settings, click on writing at the bottom under “update services”. Then simply open the link then copy and paste the URLs that are in the text file here.

Pinging your article has great benefits because it tells all of the search engines that you have new content which causes them to come over and index it. Google is quick at this but other search engines are slow so in essence, you are telling them you have fresh content for them to spider.

2#Bookmarking

This is an old method to all the old school marketers but do not underestimate its power because every article has the potential to go viral.

The best way to bookmark your article is by using only wire or ping FM or both, that way you can submit your article to over 50 different social media sites with a click of a button. If you have WordPress, only wire has a plug-in that bookmarks your article automatically.

3#Get CommentLuv

This is only going to work if you have a WordPress or BlogSpot blog. What you have to do is comment on high PR websites like ComLuv.com and others. I have a massive list of CommentLuv enabled blogs click here.  You can get vast amounts of traffic to your article by using CommentLuv and I recommend buying the premium version.

4#Manual Commenting

This is exactly the same as the previous point; just manually comment on these highly trafficked or high PR blogs. There are two things you must do, one is to have a Gravatar and the other is to make sure your comments are sensible because we all know spamming does not work.

5#Ask people to share your content

Make sure that you ask people to share your content. It does not hurt to ask your visitors to share your content via twitter, Facebook and other social networks. You can also ask them to comment on your article.

Most people do not want to be the first person to leave a comment on your blog post so to encourage your visitors to leave a comment you can write down a few comments yourself. If you do this people will be more likely to leave a comment.

Now this is one of my favourite plug-ins of all time because if you have a new blog and you are running out of content ideas this plug-in will come to your rescue.  What it does is reposts your old articles back to the first page.

I have thoroughly tested this plugin and have had no problem with duplicate content.  All that this plugin does is just put your original article on the front page and change the date format if you choose.

Another part of this plugin which I think is amazing is that every time it reposts an old article it also posts it on your twitter account.

Just by using this plugin alone I have got extra traffic and comments to some of my older posts that have not been seen by my new visitors.

Onlywire

I think that this plug-in is dynamite. All it does is automatically bookmark your posts as soon as you publish them.   It bookmarks your articles at over 30 of the top bookmarking services on the Internet like Digg, Stumble Upon, Reddit, Google plus and more.

The only downside to this plug-in is that you have to manually sign up to all of the bookmarking services. There is a way around this and that is simply to go to fiverr.com and get someone there to sign up to all of the bookmarking services for you for $5.

SEO Smart Links

This plug-in takes all the hassle out of manually interlinking your blog posts because it does it for you automatically. All you have to do is choose the keywords that you want it to interlink with and that’s it.

Interlinking your blog is an integral part of on page SEO and it will increase the strength of the website are hundredfold. Also it helps visitors to find other posts that are related to the keyword that you’re interlinking.

Blogger High SEO

I have saved the best till last, this plug-in does exactly what SEO Pressor does but with one awesome bonus and that is it’s FREE.

This plug-in will help you to SEO every one of your blog posts. It will help you with keyword density, H1 H2 H3 tags, alt tag’s and a whole lot more.
